The eyes have it

A couple of months ago, one of Isaac's eyes began to cross every so often while watching television. I mentioned it to the pediatrician at his 2-year check-up, and she recommended that he see a pediatric opthamologist. The diagnosis? Accommodative esotropia. Basically, he is far-sighted and, without the use of corrective lenses, both of his eyes will eventually cross. So it looks like it's gonna be glasses for Isaac!

The doctor recommended a couple of places in town that probably carry frames small enough to fit him, but we haven't been able to check them out yet. I did, however, dig up some sunglasses that Tia Glenda gave us to see whether Isaac would tolerate wearing such an apparatus on his face. Turns out that all four kids LOVE wearing glasses!

Ah, the power of novelty. Anyone have advice on buying frames for a 2-year-old, and then keeping said frames on his face once the newness wears off?

Actually, a lot of the little ones I see end up loving their glasses and don't repeatedly take them off because they can see better with them on! You may have a bigger problem keeping 6 other hands off of them :)

Awwww....I knew I loved that little guy! :) Ha! So, I'm jealous you don't have to patch him! It's a nightmare with Noah!! But, I have seen lots of kiddos with glasses and the tips I would have would be to get the super flexible plastic frames and a snug strap for the beginning!!!

I am certain Uncle Paul could help you answer that question. That has been his business for years :-) Good luck in your venture.

I don't have experience with that...but I too have heard that kiddos see so much better they leave them on!
Probably a strap and flexible frames will be a must! He'll look even cuter!

Hi Suzy!
I get glasses through www.zennioptical.com...I haven't looked at kid glasses there, but they are super cheap (frames AND lenses starting at just $8.00 total) so you could have a couple of backup pairs for when Isaac's break (which would be bound to happen at some point I would guess.) Good luck!

Simone has the exact same diagnosis and has been in glasses since 16 months. I've actually been surprised at how good she is about keeping them on most of the time. We go to the optical shop at Riley, and Simone wears these: http://miraflex.info/

They're pretty much indestructible, and they stay on with an adjustable band that goes all the way around her head. They fit her for them in the Riley optical shop. I think about any eye doctor can order them in, but its really important that he gets the right size for his face, so you probably want them fit by a pediatric optician. I think I paid around $120, but that included lenses, frames, and a warranty.

I'm thinking duct tape just might do the trick. :)

I enjoyed your interview over at the MoM site! Isaac is getting glasses huh? I think little kids with glasses are SO cute. Ours are going for their first check for esotropia (I knew immediately what you meant when I saw that word!) in February. I don't see anything wrong, just a precautionary check as I assume they will continue to have. Post pics of his glasses, I bet he will be a little heartbreaker! =)

Sonja, my kids were born late enough that no one even told us to be concerned about their eyes. So we're lucky to have found this so early ... I definitely plan on taking the other kids to get checked soon! And I will definitely post pics of his glasses ... if he can keep them on!

My daughter Jade wore glasses from 18 months. She loved her glasses as it allowed her to see clearly and it was the first thing she wanted when she woke up. Other kids were always grabbing them and the were forever getting scratched. A lot of opticians have a children's warranty that covers repairs and new lenses. When she turned 12 she was able to get contact lenses.

I started wearing glasses at 18 months. You'll have to ask my mama if she did anything clever to keep me from taking them off, but I don't think it was really a problem (and with a child as mischievous as me...that's a good sign!) Back in the day they just made the earpieces curl around my ears so that I couldn't get them off easily.

Must haves are flexible frames, scratch resistant lenses, and the warranty on both frames and lenses. We've had to use the warranty more than once at our house. :0)
